The grumpy parrot
and waiting for it to fly away!
Yesterday I was grumpy. It seemed like a mopey, chattering parrot sat on my shoulder all day.
Everything looked uninteresting and dull and was tinged with shades of grumpiness.
It was a beautiful crisp day and the autumnal sun was breathing warmth into the air. On my dog walk I gazed at the ground sneering whenever my heart wanted to sing.
We were planning events and future work – stuff which normally whets my creative appetite and has me dreaming and conjuring up ideas. Instead I was bored, dulled by the thought of working for a living.
I smile as I look back. A petulant, disgruntled, tired teenager was unleashed inside and took me over for the day!
When Stu asked;”Are you ok, what’s wrong?” A thousand excuses and moans elbowed into my head, wanting to blame and find fault. There were so many things to point my finger at.
However, despite this I knew something deeply. Although my chattering parrot of grumpiness was loud and insistent a deeper voice called in my soul. I KNEW the grumpiness would pass.
I didn’t need to ‘get to work’ on feeling better. I didn’t need to meditate, recite mantras or write a gratitude journal. I didn’t need to turn problems over in my head and watched the bugs scuttle in the sunlight. I didn’t need to do anything.
The deeper feeling of knowing helps me realise it will all pass. Like the rain clouds my mood will pass on through.
If I try to push the grumpy parrot off my shoulder its talons dig deep and it chatters more loudly. If I leave it alone it always flies away. It might take a while, but it always leaves.
As I sit looking out on the grey skies outside my window my heart is light – the parrot has flown. I know it’ll return some day and that’s fine. When it does I will once again tune in to that deeper trust and know it will fly off again. I no longer fear the visiting parrot!
