Reconnecting with your core
It’s dreary outside and it suits my mood. The overcast skies and rolling grey clouds are muting the colours of spring. It’s a perfect metaphor for how I feel. There’s a flatness to my spirit.
I glance around my office noting dog hairs on the floor, dust on the window ledge and my framed coaching certificate fading on the wall.
How my coaching has changed since I proudly hung that diploma up in 2004. Back then I was busy trying to be peaceful and happy. Back then being in a gloomy mood would have alarmed me. It would have signalled failure. Surely a reliable coach should always be in good spirits? Surely a competent coach would be able to ‘snap out of it’?
Now I realise I was wrong – there’s no need to change gloomy moods. Today I’m fascinated by moods – all of them. They are like a spectrum of colours. I might prefer red (happy) to green (sad), but I’m glad I can see/experience them all. High and low moods, clear and cloudy minds, happy and sad feelings. What a rich and vibrant existence we have
Whatever my mood I am reminded of the extraordinary creative potential that shifts, changes and forms my life. I can be in low spirits and yet simultaneously know, at a deep core level, that I am not my mood. I am not my beliefs, fears, personality, memories or imaginings.
So who am I? My true self resides within. I am the creative, conscious, spiritual energy that dances through my life. This invisible energy is who I truly am.
Who we truly are is beyond the fluctuating moods, thoughts and feelings that shape our experience of life. There is no point trying to shift or alter our moods any more than we might try changing the weather.
As I stand to go on a walk I glance out of the window again. The weather is shifting and the clouds have parted, blue sky breaks through and I smile. I notice that my dampened spirits have lifted, all on their own. What a wonderful reminder of the beautiful, flowing, creative nature of life.
