Here’s what I love about Stu. Here we are, sitting on the train heading back home from London. He’s chatting away to people around us and we’re getting to hear about their lives.
Buzz, the labradoodle, is a great ice-breaker. He’s stretched out underneath the table, his head is on the feet of the man opposite (who keeps reassuring us that he’s really happy with it). Occasionally he pats Buzz on the head and Buzz nuzzles his hand. We learn this man is a carpenter, who’s travelled to London to see his elderly mum.
Beside us two ladies have pulled out a wine bottle, they’re off to do some mushroom foraging with River Cottage in Axminster tomorrow. One of them has talked passionately about her work with autistic children. Her daughter is autistic and her life is devoted to supporting parents and children.
The conversation comes back to Stu (like a game of tennis) and Stu tells them about the Inside-Out understanding. As best as he can he points out how the psychological system works. They’re slightly interested and then he talks about horse-therapy and Belinda Seaward’s work with horses. Then they’re really curious. They love horses and we exchange emails. Belinda is talking at our event and they are intrigued.
Buzz stirs and they call him over to pet and scratch him. He uncoils from under the table and crosses the aisle with his tongue hanging out and a smile on his face. Buzz laps up the attention, wriggling his rear end in delight as his back is rubbed. Then he returns under the table and we carry on our conversation.
There is something so beautifully simple about these connections. A real humanity that seems to underpin us all. We end up laughing, so much so that one of the ladies wipes away tears.
When we forget our masks and stories we fall into connection and enjoy the incredible gift of being human.
When we take our eyes away from what separates and divides us then we are naturally reminded of the bigger connection that binds us together.
What a wonderful gift to be reminded of this deeper humanity that connects us. Even on a simple train journey we can witness the deeper energy that is within us all.
