Dr Rani Bora – 3Ps and Mental Health
Dr Rani Bora is a consultant psychiatrist and wellness coach. She is bringing a fresh perspective to the world of mental health. Since coming across the Three Principles she now questions some of the ideas that were once seen as ‘facts’.
- For example she questions the statement: “Mental illness is something you live with, it can’t be cured.”
- She no longer believes you HAVE to go back into a patient’s past in order to ‘heal’ them.
- She also realises that people with mental health issues have incredible wisdom, her role is point out this existing wisdom
We were delighted that Rani spoke at our Coaching Connect event. Rani speaks from her heart, with great love for her patients and team. You can’t help but be inspired by her enthusiasm and love of life. We have split her talk into three segments – please enjoy!
Dr Rani Bora – Part 1
In the first part of her talk Rani explains how she has been adding many CPD tools to her toolbox over the years. She has been through NLP training, Anthony Robbins, EFT, Narrative coaching and CBT (to name a few).
When she first came across the 3Ps she felt real resistance, particularly after the investment in money and time she’d made with all her other training.
The 3Ps is changing the way she works. For example Rani now she realises the value of ‘being present’ with her patients and clients. From this place of ‘presence’ she finds the ‘right’ thing to say in the moment.
Whilst Rani realises the 3Ps isn’t a quick magic formula, she does see its real value in providing genuine hope for people with severe mental illness; and for them to be hopeful about a cure from mental distress.
Dr Rani Bora – Part 2
Dr Rani Bora is now questioning the usefulness of going into the past to heal a patient. Examining the past is a traditional psychological approach but Rani realises that the answers don’t lie in the past.
She sees that people are seeking peace of mind. Peace of mind can’t be found in traumatic memories of past events. Peace of mind can be found within people in their own wisdom and common sense.
In the second part of her talk Dr Rani shares a couple of case studies of people with whom she has shared the Three Principles.
Dr Rani Bora – Part 3
Dr Rani Bora explains how there are some exciting things happening in Devon with mental health. A number of people from her team are currently receiving training in the 3Ps and this project is being evaluated. It is very early stages but the idea is for the trainer staff to then share this understanding with consenting patients as part of the project.
Rani wants to make it clear that the 3Ps is not a miracle cure. The Three Principles is very helpful for both staff and patients on many levels. For the staff it gives them permission to realise they are not the ‘experts’. For the patients it helps them realise that they don’t need to be afraid of their depression or paranoid thinking.
Dr Rani Bora says the Three Principles has helped her wake up to ‘human-ness’ of her and her patients. She sees the similarities between her and patients. For example although she doesn’t have a diagnosis of mental illness, she too will go up and down with her mood state.
She also realises the incredible wisdom that both her and her patients have access to. Rani Bora relies more and more on trusting this wisdom to guide her. She believes that the 3Ps will make a significant difference to mental health services in time. She leaves us with an optimistic and positive message for the future.
