Answer to gang violence?
Is there an answer to youth violence and gang culture? Does that answer lie within the young people themselves?
I was blown away by a conversation with Robin Lockhart. He is a youth behaviour change specialist and he works with young people who are directly impacted by gangs.
I don’t live in London and my life (as a white middle-class adult living in rural Devon) might be pretty idyllic on many levels. But I am a member of this community of Great Britain and I want to support/change the conversation around mental health, violence, fear and distress that young people experience.
Rather than trying to stop the problem of violence with punitive, knee-jerk reactions the time now come for us to stand up, alongside our young people, and offer a different way.
As adults we need to give our young people a voice and to support them in finding an answer to the fear and violence that punctuates their lives.
Robin Lockhart sees a way through this quite clearly. He sees that it’s time to engage with young people – it’s time to communicate ‘soul to soul’.
He sees that if we want a peaceful world then we need to focus on peace and not violence. There is a conversation to have with young people, and as Robin says, the answer is ‘staring us in the face, it’s time to care for them, love them, honour them, celebrate them.’
If you’re interested in taking steps to change the conversation in our society – then let me know.
In July this year (in Devon) we are bringing people together as part of our ‘Resilient Young Minds’ conference and Robin is one of the speakers.
