How to live simply

The swallows in the garage

The swallows are raising their second brood in our garage. I can just see the straggly feathers of the chicks and hear their squabbling chatter when the parents swoop in with food. The adult birds tirelessly come backwards and forwards throughout the day.

These swallows will be migrating to South Africa soon. Apparently they cover about 200 miles a day on a hazardous journey across the Pyrenees, Morocco and the Sahara. As I look at these tiny, fragile creatures I can’t believe they will be undertaking such a trek, they must be so tough.

They seem unperturbed at the expedition ahead. They feed their young, sleep and then somehow know when it’s time to head off to Africa.

Imagine if the swallows started to worry about their journey to South Africa. What if they started to pack food parcels, or scared themselves with stories of how they might perish on the journey. Their simplicity is quite awe inspiring – they don’t get weighed down with their fears.

By contrast I often have to wrestle with the thoughts that spin through my head. It can be as simple as kicking myself because I forgot to pick up milk, or imagining that our house is about to fall down (when we discovered damp under the bathroom floor).

The simplicity of the 3Ps

These fears are often ridiculous but they tear through my head like a tornado.
What I love about the teaching of the Three Principles is that I no longer take my thoughts so seriously. I still worry, I still feel fearful, however now I notice my thinking more quickly and allow them to pass on through.

I have noticed life feels more peaceful and less complicated.

I might not have the same level of simplicity as the swallows, but I do love the way they act as a reminder to enjoy and live from moment to moment.
